Phil's practice is focused exclusively on the life sciences. He works primarily in the following areas: pharmaceuticals, medical devices and biotechnology.

As part of his life sciences practice, Phil provides strategic counsel and business advice. This includes advice on positioning in the marketplace, understanding and dealing with government legislative initiatives, as well as advice on advertising, transactions and all aspects of regulatory matters. He also deals frequently with Health Canada regarding pharmaceuticals, medical devices and natural health products. Phil has been listed as a recommended lawyer in the PLC Cross-border Life Sciences Handbook for being an all-around life sciences specialist with extensive product liability and regulatory experience.

Phil advises and represents biotechnology companies from the time of inception to the establishment of their business structure, financing, patent protection and commercialization. He is listed in Best Lawyers in Canada in the area of biotechnology law.

Some of Phil's experience in these areas includes:

  • Advising clients on the impact of Ontario Bill 102, and the changed legislative landscape
  • Regularly advising clients with respect to industry Codes of Conduct of Canada's Research-Based Pharmaceutical Companies (Rx&D) and MEDEC
  • Providing advice and representation regarding the Patented Medicine Prices Review Board (PMPRB)
  • Advising and representing clients with respect to pre-clearance and complaints with the Advertising Standards Council and compliance with, and breaches of, the PAAB Code
  • Advising biotechnology companies on start-up, including patent protection and initial financing through to commercialization

Phil regularly advises and represents clients with respect to market access issues. He acts as project leader to many of the firm's clients in this area. He also leads the firm's teams with respect to pharmaceutical and medical device product liability claims including the defence of complicated class actions.

Phil is a founding director of Health Technology Exchange (HTX.ca) which provides assistance to small and medium enterprises including research grants, business advice and focused services. He is also a Director, Member of the Executive and Treasurer of the Canadian Orthopaedic Care Strategy Group committed to advancing improvements in musculoskeletal health to ensure that patient health and outcomes are maintained and improved in the area. Phil is also a director of the Toronto Railway Historical Association, a charity which is developing the Toronto Railway Heritage Centre at Roundhouse Park in downtown Toronto.

In addition to offering business and legal advice, Phil's clients benefit from his extensive litigation experience. He has represented clients in all levels of courts on product liability cases involving health products, and has in-depth experience and expertise in defending complex class actions. Phil is a contributing editor of the Federated Press's Class Action Journal.

Phil is Peoples Church Warden at St. Thomas's Anglican Church in downtown Toronto.
